Miller Peak Fire
Publication Type: News - 07/24/2024 - 09:58

KEY MESSAGE The containment of the fire has increased to 55%. Crews continue to work on mop up, patrol, and strengthening of containment lines. An unmanned aerial system (UAS) is being utilized for infrared flight detection to assist in finding hotspots. A Type 3 Incident Management Team will begin to shadow the current IMT as the incident begins to downsize in complexity due to increased containment.

CURRENT STATUS Fire activity has moderated with the more seasonal weather which has been favorable to enhance the already constructed handlines and continue to secure the fire perimeter. The containment around the fire has increase to 55% and crews are continuing with ‘mop up’ operations to continue to increase containment. Crews have remained vigilant with the cooler temperatures and have continued working toward securing the line and remain aware of the values at risk and continue to prioritize protection of these values with heavy equipment. Firefighter and aviation resources continue to stay available to assist in response to new ignitions in the area as needed.

WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR Westerly upper level flow persisted over the fire on Friday keeping the temperatures near average for this time of year. A very dry air-mass moved into the region allowing afternoon humidity readings to drop into the teens. The fire experienced westerly winds gusting up to 25 mph at times. This westerly upper level flow will continue to be over the fire through the weekend.

CLOSURES Lower Miller Creek Road is closed from debris due to the storm. A temporary flight restriction is in effect over the fire area. An area and road closure around the fire is in effect due to hazardous conditions resulting from fire activity. Stage II fire restrictions are in effect in the area. Specific closure information and maps are posted on InciWeb at https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/mtlnf-miller-peak-fire and https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/lolo/alerts-notices as they are implemented
