Big Hollow Fire Update 08-31-2024
Big Hollow Fire
Publication Type: News - 08/31/2024 - 09:14
Location: 13 miles west of Grant, MT Start Date: August 23, 2024
Cause: Undetermined Size: 3435 acres Containment: 90%
Key Message: This will be the last daily update for the Big Hollow Fire unless activity warrants.
CURRENT STATUS + PLANNED ACTIONS:
Fire activity has been limited to pockets of timber in the interior far enough away from control lines or features, and will likely increase with the onset of hot and dry conditions. Smoke will be visible as dead debris on the forest floor continues to burn. Crews will continue the mop up process of locating and extinguishing heat by cutting up burning logs and mixing dirt and water into pockets of heat, to work towards 100% containment. Several firefighting resources have been released and the fire has transitioned from a Type 3 Incident Command structure to a Type 4 meaning the fire’s complexity and number of resources assigned has decreased.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
Hot and very dry conditions are the result of a high-pressure ridge that settled over the area. Minimum relative humidities are forecasted to be in the high upper single digits, with temperatures at a high of 81-86 degrees. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to return to the region on Monday and Tuesday that have the potential to bring gusty winds of 35-45 mph.
EVACUATIONS AND CLOSURES
There are currently no evacuations or closures in place. Fire managers are asking that the public avoids the immediate fire area for both public and firefighter safety.
