Highlights:
The Central Cascades Interagency Management Team assumed command of the Microwave Tower Fire on Monday, July 29, 2024. Yesterday, crews made excellent progress in building and securing lines. On the western edge of the fire, crews mopped up hotspots to improve and further secure the fire line. On the northeastern edge, firefighters were able to build direct line to Interstate 84. Aircraft provided water to support suppression efforts. Crews continued to patrol and monitor the southern edge of the fire to keep perimeter secure.
Operations:
Today, firefighters will mop up along the northwestern and northeastern lines, with aircraft dropping water as needed to further contain these lines. Crews will also continue to secure, monitor and patrol the entire fire perimeter.
Fire Behavior and Weather:
Despite recent precipitation, the fuels remain dry. The interior pockets of unburnt fuel will continue to produce smoke, and flames may be visible. Drivers are asked to please use caution on Interstate 84 as firefighters and aircraft are still working in the area.
Road and Area Closures:
For public and firefighter safety, The Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail is closed from Mosier to Hood River, including the East and West Hatfield Trailheads. Hood River County also has closures in effect for the fire area for public and firefighter safety.
