Fire Cause: Lightning

Summary

Although cooler and more moist air moved across the area yesterday, heavy timber continues to retain heat and serve as an ignition source inside the fires’ containment lines. All four uncontained fires show scattered interior areas of creeping and smoldering fire. Infrared flights indicate increased areas of widely scattered heat, as well as isolated heat sources across the fires. Clearly, fire crews on the ground still have some work to do and are supported by aircraft dropping water, as well as hand crews and heavy equipment improving containment and contingency lines.

Chalk Fire (5,782 acres, 66% containment)

Crews continue to patrol the north, east, and south sides of this fire, while improving and deepening control lines on the west side. They are also continuing to work on the indirect lines to remove fire-weakened trees and snags. There’s creeping and smoldering fire in a large green island on the west side of this fire that crews have been monitoring and holding within the fire’s edge.

Moss Mountain Fire (900 acres, 0% containment)

Work continues on the indirect lines along Forest Service Roads 2120 and 23 to reduce the risk of future fire spread. West of the fire along Forest Service Roads 490 and 2309 crews are patrolling and taking appropriate action to limit growth. Crews and heavy equipment continue to work along the Forest Service Road 2120 in order to limit growth on the fire.

208 Fire (293 acres, 0% containment)

Monitoring continues on the 208 Fire. Air resources are being used to detect any new heat or spread.

217 Fire (38 acres, 100% contained), Tire Mountain Fire (23 acres, 100% contained), McKinley Creek Fire (24 acres, 100% contained), Coffeepot Fire (6,182 acres, 100% contained)

These fires remain in monitor/patrol status. Mop-up continues on the Coffeepot Fire, as scattered hot spots remain. Helicopters may drop water on hot spots as necessary to keep these fires in check.

Weather and Fire Behavior

Weather moving in off the southern Oregon coast marked a change in the weather today with cooler temperatures and slightly higher humidity. Although there were a few afternoon showers, very little of the moisture made it to the ground. We expect Monday to be cooler yet with higher humidity across the entire fire area. Warm and dry conditions are expected again mid-week.
