Fire Cause: Lightning 

Summary

Cooler temperatures and cloudy skies on Monday moderated fire behavior, especially in areas of lighter fuels. Dead and down trees continue to smolder, and heat remains on all fires within the Willamette Complex South. 

Chalk Fire (5,421 acres, 54% containment)

Crews continue to reinforce control lines by extinguishing burning material and removing snags and hazard trees. On Tuesday, crews along the southwest portion of the Chalk Fire will improve completed line along Forest Road 1912 and Forest Road 1925, tying back into the main body of the fire. 

Coffeepot Fire (6,078 acres, 35% containment)

On Monday, firefighters worked to eliminate hot spots near the fire perimeter. The Coffeepot Fire continues to produce heat throughout its interior as it burns through heavy timber. As a result, crews will continue to hold and improve control lines. 

Moss Mountain Fire (754 acres, 0% containment)

Specialized crews used heavy equipment to create containment line. Containment options are being evaluated by fire managers to best attack fire in hazardous terrain. Moss Mountain will continue to slowly expand on the south, west, and north sides. 

208 Fire (199 acres, 0% containment)

The 208 Fire is exhibiting slow growth within a remote wilderness area. Fire managers will continue to monitor. 

217 Fire, Tire Mountain Fire, and McKinley Fire 

The 217, Tire Mountain, and McKinley fires are 100% contained. Crews are continuing to patrol for any potential breach of the containment line. 

Weather and Fire Behavior

Monday, marine air lowered temperatures by 5 to 10 degrees and increased humidity. Gusts reached upwards of 20 mph across the fire area. Weather is expected to be somewhat warmer and dryer mid-week with limited cloud cover, with cooling temperatures and possible precipitation later in the week. Winds will remain from the northwest. 

Closures and Fire Restrictions

Area, road, trail, and recreation site closures are in place on the Willamette National Forest in the vicinity of active fires. Temporary road barricades are in place to restrict traffic across the fire areas.
