Anvil Fire

Size: 22,170 acres       Start Date:  August 25, 2023 Location:  8 miles east of Port Orford, OR
Containment:  80%   Total personnel: 282 Resources: 9 crews, 1 helicopter, 2 engines

Areas of the fire remained saturated from approximately eight inches of accumulated rain over the past week. Firefighters focused efforts where they could safely operate and successfully completed dozer line and road repairs along the west and north sides of the fire yesterday. Hand crews continued the ongoing chipping of landing piles along Forest Service Road 3302. Terrain was slick and hazardous from the abundance of recent rains, hindering fire personnel from accessing the China Mountain area. Conditions are expected to improve over the next three days with warmer and drier weather, allowing the last bit of work in that area to be completed. On the northeast corner of the fire, crews scouted areas of hand line and will be repairing it today. Today the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) will be flying the uncontained east side of the fire with infrared technology to check for any remaining pockets of heat. As work wraps up and moist, cooler fall weather settles in, most remaining fire resources will be demobilizing over the next few days.

Evacuations: Level I evacuation zones around the Anvil Fire were removed on October 16 at 3:00 PM. There are currently no evacuations remaining on either fire.

Flat Fire

Size: 34,242 acres   Start Date:  July 15, 2023     Location:  2 miles southeast of Agness, OR   

Containment:  93%       Total personnel:  53    Resources: 1 crew, 4 engines

Crews are continuing chipping operations, reducing fuel loading and creating mulch to protect the soil from erosion. Additionally, firefighters are carrying on erosion control measures by seeding and adding straw to the Pine Grove bicycle trail.

Restrictions: The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest lifted all Public Use Restrictions on Forest Service

Lands. The Fire Danger Rating and Industrial Fire Precaution Levels were removed from all five Ranger Districts on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, signaling the end of fire season, effective midnight, October 17. Emergency road and area closures are still in effect in fire areas (see above).

Weather: Temperatures are expected to reach the low 70s today. Conditions will dry out through Friday until another system bringing light precipitation moves into the area over the weekend. The extended forecast shows a progressive pattern of alternating days of warm, dry weather followed by more rain.
