Forested landscape with smoke billowing from the mountain top in the background. Green grass in the foreground.

A burned landscape presents several safety hazards that either did not exist prior to the fire or have been exacerbated by the effects of the fire. These hazards include unstable soils that allow rocks to dislodge and roll down steep hillsides; fire-weakened trees and snags that can fall over or large limbs breaking away in windy conditions; and stump holes where fire has burned through a tree root system and created cavities that can collapse under your feet. Always remember to be aware of your surroundings and aware of the hazards in a burned area.

Significant Events

The Forest issued a revised closure order, effective August 17, 2024, to include specific roads and trails in the fire area. The closure order and corresponding map can be found under the "Closures" tab.

Fire activity has picked up on the southwest corner of the fire in the Reservoir Creek drainage and on the northwest corner near Stine Mountain. Helicopters dropped water on the areas of heat on Stine Mountain to prevent further movement north and to keep the fire south of that area.

Crews are holding the fire on Pettengill Road on the southern flank, keeping the fire north of Pettengill Creek. The fire in the Reservoir Creek area is mostly backing fire with short uphill runs to the west, up the ridge towards Lost Horse.

Outlook
Planned Actions

Crews, supported by helicopter water buckets drops, will continue to address the areas of residual heat.

Crews will hold the fire along the southern flank on the Pettengill Road and prevent further movement south, keeping the fire north of Pettengill Creek.

Projected Incident Activity

There are isolated pockets of heat in the Stine Ridge area, in the southwest corner of the fire in Reservoir Creek, and in a small pocket of unburned fuel on the eastern flank.

Some residual heat is present in the Evans Creek/Reservoir Creek area and the Stine Mountain area, producing some smoke but posing no threats or issues.

The fire in the southwest corner near Reservoir Creek is mostly backing, with short uphill runs to the west and up the ridge towards Lost Horse.

Current Weather
Weather Concerns

Warmer and drier conditions, with an increasingly unstable atmosphere, could potentially result in increased fire activity.

There is a RED FLAG WARNING in effect until 10 p.m. tonight. The combination of low relative humidity and thunderstorm outflow winds may result in critical fire weather conditions, increasing the risk for new and existing fires to spread quickly. The forecast calls for relative humidity at 15-20% and southwest winds 15-25 mph, with stronger outflow winds up to 50 mph with passing thunderstorms.
