The Red Fire is burning on the southwest slope of Redtop Mountain within the Diamond Peak Wilderness on the Deschutes National Forest. An assessment by the initial attack incident commander and local fire managers determined the risk to responders was too great to continue with direct attack due to firefighter safety concerns including the remote location, a lack of escape routes and safety zones, and snag hazards. Currently, a full suppression strategy is being implemented utilizing shaded fuel breaks. Fire managers are continually reevaluating the safest, most effective suppression strategy based on changing weather, fuel conditions, and fire behavior. Firefighter and public safety remain the management team’s highest priority in managing this fire.

Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 8 led by Incident Commander Brad Bergman is in command of the fire.

Narrative:
The Red Fire is burning in available surface fuel consisting of dead and down 100 hour to 1,000 hours fuels along with surface litter, limbwood, needle litter and duff. Fuel moisture varies within the fuel complex due to overstory shading or lack thereof. As warm and dry weather prevails, fuel moisture will continue to drop making more fuel available and increasing surface fire activity.

Narrative:
Active surface fire is occurring in old aged lodgepole pine and mixed conifer stands. Fire is consuming dead and down 100 hour fuels, limbwood, and needle litter. Fire continues to back downslope toward the Whitefish Creek Trail in Division M, staying within containment lines.

Outlook
Planned Actions

Continue to implement fuel breaks with hand crews and mixed mechanical methods. Maintain deployed structure protection equipment.  Continue constructing shaded fuel break, and any needed actions to keep the fire in the wilderness. 9000' water handling system along Whitefish Creek trail is complete. Fire is close to management action points 1, 3, and 7. Assessing and mitigating hazard trees as needed along the hose lay on the Whitefish Creek Trail.

Projected Incident Activity

12 hours: Fire activity expected to moderate with somewhat cooler and more humid weather today coupled with cloud cover and gusty outflow winds from passing thunderstorms. Single and group tree torching can be anticipated along with low intensity upslope surface fire runs.
24 hours: Surface fire spread will moderate with cooler and more humid conditions. Movement. will again be confined to areas where terrain and fuels align. Backing fire movement towards the Whitefish Trail will continue to be an issue. Single tree torching is likely.
48 hours: Active surface fire can be expected. Movement will again be confined to areas where terrain and fuels align. Backing fire movement towards the Whitefish Trail will continue to be an issue. Single and group tree torching is likely.
72 hours: Active surface fire spread can be expected as warm dry weather continues. Movement will again be confined to areas where terrain and fuels align. Backing fire movement towards the Whitefish Trail will continue to be an issue. Single and group tree torching is likely.

Remarks

Short team with IC3 Brandon Hoffman, IC3(t) Ian Quist assumed command 8/31 @ 1800.

Weather Concerns (synopsis of current and predicted weather; discuss related factors that may cause concern:

A low pressure system will move across the fire area Monday night and Tuesday morning and will usher in cool dry air for the day on Tuesday. A warming and drying trend returns Wednesday through the rest of the week although temperatures will be more moderate, in the 70's, and relative humidity higher, in the mid 2i0's.
