The Flat Fire is staffed by both a day and night shift. Each night firefighters have continued burning operations and holding the line. The smoke in the air amplifies the glow of the fire.

During firing operations or burnouts, firefighters are exposed to heavy smoke at times, especially when winds push smoke across the line. Here, the shadow of firefighter can be seen walking through thick smoke during a burnout operation on the southwest corner of the Flat Fire. 

On August 3, Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 2 arrived and was inbriefed on the fire history, current status and firefighting strategies. On August 4 they will be shadowing Pacific Northwest Team 3 and will assume command of the incident on Saturday, August 5 at 6 am. These transition days help ensure a transfer of pertinent information throughout the day. The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Coos Forest Protective Association and local personnel will continue to be heavily involved in the oversight of the fire.

Helicopters have been dropping buckets of water to cool hot areas on the fire edge.
