In this video, a drum masticator on what is referred to as a Type 2 excavator, is reducing the ladder fuels on a fireline for the Salmon 33 and No Man Fires. The drum masticator is able to grind the woody vegetation into chips then drops them out onto the ground. This creates more space between the lower surface fuels and the tree canopies above, reducing the chances that fire will get up into the trees where it would be more intense and harder to fight.
