Rain returns to the forecast, aiding firefighters in the last stages of mop upCOTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – Cooler temperatures and rain showers have returned to the forecast overnight, naturally helping firefighters engaged on the Cottage Grove – Lane 1 Fire in the last efforts of mop-up operations. Overnight, a quarter inch of rain was recorded over the fire. Containment has increased once again, now sitting at 85%. As resources continue to find and extinguish remaining hotspots, this number will rise.

Containment increases, ODF Team 1 prepares for transitionCOTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – Firefighters on the Cottage Grove – Lane 1 Fire continue to focus on mopping up adjacent to the perimeter, increasing containment of the fire. Today, containment has reached 81% as resources continue to push into the interior, grubbing out hot spots and cooling the heat with water. Fire can be difficult to locate, burning roots deep underground. Crews use infrared cameras to help locate these hot spots.

Firefighters using drones to identify hot spots near firelineCOTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – Mop-up continues to be the focus for firefighters on the Cottage Grove – Lane 1 Fire. The use of handheld infrared cameras and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) equipped with infrared cameras has helped firefighters identify fire burning below the surface. Once located, firefighters dig up these hotspots and use water to cool the heat and douse the flames.

Rainy weather challenges firefighting efforts, provides opportunities COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – More than one inch of rain fell on the Cottage Grove – Lane 1 Fire Saturday afternoon during passing thunderstorms. These storms produced abundant lightning across western Oregon throughout the day. As a safety precaution, firefighters left the fireline as thunderstorms passed through the area. Despite these challenging firefighting conditions, including a threat of flash flooding, containment increased today to 55%.
