One of the tools that firefighters use while suppressing wildfires are high pressure pumps. These pumps distribute water from creeks, rivers and other waterways directly onto hotspots along fire perimeters.

Firefighters exercise caution while setting these up to protect our valuable natural resources. Pumps and fuel canisters are always stored within barriers that limit the potential for spilling fuel onto the ground or into the water.

The North Umpqua Hydroelectric Project includes nearly 10 miles of flumes. The project generates hydroelectric power by using water primarily from the North Umpqua River and two of its major tributaries, the Clearwater River and Fish Creek. Folding frame tanks are filled with water if needed to protect the flumes and trestles from wildfires. (USDA Forest Service photo by Randy Pyle)

Yesterday’s hot, dry weather increased fire activity, exposing interior hotspots of several fires in the Diamond Complex including the Lemolo, Ooya, Pine Bench and Potter Fires. (USDA Forest Service photo by Randy Pyle)
